Information about Blagaj and the Eco Center
The EcoCentre of Blagaj was inaugurated in 2007 with the aim of contributing to nature conservation and increasing environmental awareness. In terms of nature conservation, the EcoCentre is focused on the recovery of the griffon vulture colony that became extinct during the war. Additionally, the centre supports donkeys and other animals for conservation reasons and for the community's enjoyment. After its inauguration, a great number of people began to visit the EcoCentre to admire the vultures and other animals. As a result, the centre eventually developed education programs for the local schools.
Education is an important priority to the centre, and through our programs, we have connected students from West and East Mostar in a relaxing and fun manner. From 2007 till 2012 about 5500 elementary school students have passed through our educational program. During a visit, the workshops usually consist of seeing the Griffon vultures, riding the donkeys, visiting the cultural-historical monuments in Blagaj, viewing a multimedia presentation, and then finishing the day with art work. The main goal of the complete program is multiethnic exchange accompanied with the educational program on the importance of biodiversity at the local level, so that in the future we can work on the global level.
Another important project to the centre is the recovery of the Griffon vulture, creating conditions for its reintroduction in Bosnia and Herzegovina together with the development of rural areas, both socially and economically.
